IPO Investor Categories
• Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIB)- Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIBs) are
typically large investors with financial expertise, such as mutual funds,
insurance companies, pension funds and hedge funds, who are considered to have
expertise and resources will evaluate investment opportunities QIBs are
required to meet certain investment norms laid down by the Securities and
Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for their placement participate in an IPO, and
are allowed to bid shares at prices below the price offered to retail investors.
• Non-Institutional Investors (NII) - Non-Institutional Investors (NIIs), on the
other hand, are usually individual investors, high net worth individuals
(HNIs), or institutions without financial standards to be closed as QIBs . They
are allowed to participate in IPOs at the same price as retail investors.
NII category has two subcategories:
1. sNII - "sNII" means "small non-institutional
investor". This sub-category includes investors who have created shares of
Rs. 2 lakh and Rs. 10 lakh in IPO.
2. bNII - "bNII" means "large investor other than
institutional investor". This sub-category includes investors who have
created shares worth more than Rs. 10 lakh in IPO.
• Retail Individual Investors (RII) - Retail Individual Investors (RIIs) are
individual investors who apply for shares worth up to Rs. 2 lakh in IPOs, aimed
at encouraging retail participation in IPOs.
• Employee (EMP)- In an IPO, the category of Employees (EMP) is
reserved for the employees, directors and associate employees of the issuing
company, and the shares to be allocated to this category by the issuing company
is determined by the main administrator of the IPO .
• Others- Certain groups of eligible shareholders or other investors who
have a reserved quota in an IPO.
