IPO Investor Categories
• Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIB)- qualified institutional buyers (QIBs) are
large investors with the investment expertise, such as the mutual funds,
insurance companies, pension funds and hedge funds, who are the considered to
have the expertise and resources to evaluate investment opportunities - it
requires standards to be met, and retail investors are allowed to bid shares at
prices below the offer price.
• Non-Institutional Investors (NII) - Non-institutional investors (NIIs), on the
other hand, generally consist of individual investors, high net worth
individuals (HNIs), or companies that do not meet the financial criteria a be
classified as QIBs and allowed to participate in Initial Public Offering “IPOs”
at the same price as retail investors.
NII category has two subcategories:
1. sNII - "sNII" means "small non-institutional
investor". This sub-category includes investors who have the created
shares of Rs. 2 lakh and Rs. 10 lakh in IPO.
2. bNII - "bNII" means "large non-institutional
investor". This sub-category includes investors who have a bid to acquire
shares worth more than Rs. 10 lakh in IPO.
• Retail Individual Investors (RII) - Retail Individual Investors (RIIs) are
individual investors who apply for shares worth up to Rs. 2 lakhs in Initial
Public Offering IPOs, aimed at encouraging retail participation in Initial
Public Offering IPOs.
• Employee (EMP)- In an Initial Public Offering “IPO”, the category
of Employees (EMP) is reserved for employees, directors and associate employees
of the issuing company. The issuing company and the sponsor of the Initial
Public Offering “IPO” determine the share allocation for this group.
• Others- An eligible group of shareholders or other investors with investments in an Initial Public Offering IPO.
