IPO Investor Categories

  • Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIB)- Qualified institutional buyers “QIBs” are typically large financial investors, such as the mutual funds, insurance companies, pension funds, & hedge funds, who are the considered to have the expertise and resources to test investments opportunities check. QIBs must meet certain financial criteria set by the Securities and Exchange Board of India “SEBI” to participate in the Initial Public Offering “IPO”. They are the allowed to bid on the shares at a lower price than the price offered to retail investors.
  • Non-Institutional Investors (NII) - Non-Institutional Investors (NIIs), on the other hand, are typically individual investors, high net worth individuals (HNIs), or institutions without the financial standards to be the closed as QIBs. They are allowed to participate in IPOs at the same price as retail investors.

NII category has two subcategories:

1.  sNII - "sNII" means "small non-institutional investor". This sub-category includes investors who have created shares of ₹2 lakh and ₹10 lakhs in IPO.

 

2.  bNII - "bNII" means "large investor other than the institutional investor". This sub-category includes the investors who have the created shares worth more than ₹10 lakhs in IPO.


  • Retail Individual Investors (RII) - Retail Individual Investors “RIIs” are the individual investors who apply for the share’s worth up to ₹2 lakh in Initial Public Offering “IPOs” to the encourage brokerages to participate in the IPO process. 
  • Employee (EMP)- In an “Initial Public Offering” IPO, the category of Employees (EMP) is reserved for the employees, directors & associate employees of the issuing company, & the shares to be allocated to this category by the issuing company is determined by the main administrator of the IPO .
  • Others- Certain groups of the qualified shareholders or the other investors with the reserved Initial Public Offering “IPO” quotas.
